Recent studies have showed that the color red tends to increase our attraction toward others, feelings of jealousy, and even reaction times. Now, new research shows that female monkeys also respond to the color red, suggesting that biology, rather than our culture, may play the fundamental role in our 鈥渞ed鈥� reactions.

Noted anthropologist Stefan Helmreich will provide insights on how scientists are studying waves in nature to understand phenomena as diverse as the social sciences and climate change.

Knill, who came to the University as an associate professor in 1999, was a leading scientist in the study of human perception. He also served as the associate director of the Center for Visual Science since 2001. Most of his work, which included over 60 research and review articles, focused on visual perception and how humans use vision to guide physical actions.

Elika Bergelson, a newly-appointed research assistant professor in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, focuses on understanding how babies learn words between 6-to 18-months old. Funding from the NIH recognizes Bergelson as one of the nation鈥檚 鈥渆xceptional early career scientist鈥� and will help her pathbreaking work advance more quickly.

The University has appointed Jessica Guzm谩n-Rea as the director of its Intercultural Center (ICC). In this role, Guzm谩n-Rea will promote collaborative programming and initiatives that are welcoming to students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.

Andrew P. Barowsky ’72, president of the Barowsky Foundation, has committed $1 million to create a path for students at Dominican University of California aspiring to attend graduate school at Rochester.

Chicago native Vic Mensa is an independent rap artist who recently began a solo career after the breakup of his rap-rock band Kids These Days. Asher Roth is best known for his hit single 鈥淚 Love College鈥�, which reached number 12 on the US Billboard Music Charts.
