Evolutionary biologist Harmit Singh Malik 鈥00 (PhD) is one of 100 scientists in the nation who will receive the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers at the White House this fall. A researcher at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Malik is an affiliate assistant professor of genome sciences at the University of Washington鈥檚 medical school.
Maria Schneider 鈥85E (MM) won the Composer of the Year, Arranger of the Year, and with her Maria Schneider Orchestra, the Large Ensemble of the Year awards at the 2009 Jazz Journalists Association Jazz Awards in June. Winners were determined by the votes of the 450 members of the association.
David Trindade 鈥68 (MS), an engineer at Sun Microsystems, has been awarded the 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award by the Reliability Society of the IEEE, an international association of engineers and scientists with interests in electrical and computer sciences, engineering, and related disciplines. The award recognizes Trindade鈥檚 contributions as an engineer, executive, consultant, university instructor, and textbook coauthor.
Toronto saxophonist Wallace Halladay 鈥07E (DMA) was awarded the Virginia Parker Prize, an honor given by the Canada Council for the Arts to classical music performers under the age of 32 who demonstrate 鈥渙utstanding talent and musicianship.鈥 In the 25-year history of the prize, Halladay is the first woodwind player to take the honor.
