Program Goals and Objectives
Orthodontics Residency Program
Pediatric Residency Program
- To provide residents with an educational experience that meets or exceeds CODA standards for advanced Educational Programs in Pediatric Dentistry.
- To prepare graduates for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry certification process.
- To prepare graduates for a career in Pediatric Dentistry with the potential for assuming leadership roles within the profession.
- To produce a Pediatric Dentist competent in the prevention and management of orofacial health problems as defined by the scope of Pediatric Dentistry practice.
- To stimulate the resident’s desire for creativity, critical thinking and inquiry necessary for the advancement of Pediatric Dentistry.
- To sensitize residents to the problems associated with access to health care for children living in poverty and populations with special health care needs.
- To train residents in becoming medical professionals who embody the ICARE values set forth by the ÈËÆÞÉÙ¸¾×¨Çø Medical Center: Inclusiveness, Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Excellence.
AEGD Residency Program
- The two-year residents are expected to fulfill the postgraduate requirements of ÈËÆÞÉÙ¸¾×¨Çø Eastman Institute for Oral Health and the American Dental Association’s Commission on Dental Education through the accreditation requirements.
- To attract and educate the future leaders of dental practice, dental education, dental research, and community service.
- To stimulate the resident’s interest and prepare the graduate for a possible career in academics and research.
- Prepare the graduate to act as primary care provider for individuals and groups of patients. This includes providing emergency and multi-disciplinary comprehensive oral health care, providing patient focused care that is coordinated by the General Practitioner, and directing health promotion and disease prevention activities.
- Plan and provide multidisciplinary oral health care for a wide variety of patients including patients with special needs.
- Function effectively and efficiently in multiple health care environments within interdisciplinary health care teams.
- Apply scientific principles to learning and oral health care. This includes using critical thinking, evidence of outcome-based clinical decision-making, and technology-based information retrieval system.
- Utilize the values of professional ethics, lifelong learning, patient centered care, adaptability and acceptance of cultural diversity in professional practice.
- Understand the oral health needs of communities and engage in community service.
- Manage the delivery of oral health care by applying concepts of patient and practice management and quality improvements that are responsive to a dynamic health care environment.
Periodontics Residency Program
- Provide comprehensive preparation of competent residents to practice periodontics.
- To provide comprehensive periodontal care for a variety of patients and periodontal diseases.
- Prepare residents to successfully complete certification by the American Board of Periodontology.
- Train residents to be teachers.
- Provide residents with the opportunity to do research and obtain postgraduate degrees, to the extent that they desire.
Prosthodontics Residency Program
- To provide competency in managing and treating a wide scope of clinical conditions for partially edentulous, completely edentulous and dentate patients.
- To develop clinical competency in the application of principles associated with fixed prosthodontics, implant prosthodontics, and removable prosthodontics.
- To provide competency in the application of evidence-based dentistry.
- To provide competency in the application of ethical principles and decision making in the students’ clinical and research environment.
- To develop competency in the application of esthetic to Prosthodontics.
- To develop competency in the surgical placement (and related surgical procedures) and restoration of dental implants.
- To provide competency in the selection and application of biomaterials.
- To develop an in-depth knowledge and competency for the utilization of digital dentistry workflows.
- To develop competency in the prosthodontic management of the patients with temporomandibular disorders and /or orofacial pain.
- To provide experience with patients requiring maxillofacial prosthetic care.
- To provide relevant didactic course content in the Basic Sciences, Prosthodontic and related disciplines which will establish a firm foundation to base clinical diagnosis and treatment in prosthodontics.
- To develop competency and a knowledge base sufficient to challenge The American Board of Prosthodontists examination.
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) Residency Program
- Proficient in-patient evaluation and management
- Proficient in dentoalveolar surgery
- Proficient in ambulatory anesthesia and sedation
- Competent in orthognathic surgery
- Competent in TMJ surgery
- Competent in oncologic surgery including major resections
- Competent in reconstructive surgery
- Competent in facial trauma surgery
- Competent in facial cosmetic surgery
Orofacial Pain Residency Program
- Provide education in orofacial pain at the level beyond predoctoral education relating to the basic mechanisms and the anatomic, physiologic, neurologic, vascular, behavioral, and psychosocial aspects of orofacial pain.
- Plan and provide interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary health care for a wide variety of patients with orofacial pain.
- Interact with other health care professionals in order to facilitate the patients’ total health care.
- Manage the delivery of oral health care by applying concepts of patient and practice management and quality improvement that are responsive to a dynamic health care environment.
- Function effectively and efficiently in multiple health care environments and within interdisciplinary multidisciplinary health care teams.
- Apply scientific principles to learning and oral health care. This includes using critical thinking, evidence or outcomes-based clinical decision-making and technology-based information retrieval systems.
- To enhance the dissemination of information about diagnosis and treatment/management of orofacial pain to all practitioners of the health profession.
- To expose the students to research, literature search, research design, research methods, data analysis and outcome measures and scientific writing.
- To enhance the interaction and communication among those investigating pain at their institution and beyond.
- Utilize the values of professional ethics, lifelong learning, patient centered care, adaptability, and acceptance of cultural diversity in professional practice.
MS Program
- Display independent critical thinking in the evaluation of scientific literature and the ability to incorporate novel information from this analysis into the clinical setting.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the dental clinical sciences, scientific methodology, and research design.
- Conduct dental clinical research.
- Demonstrate knowledge and proficiency in the design and implementation of evidence-based care and treatment of dental disorders.
- Demonstrate expertise in clinical teaching and oversight of pre-doctoral dental students in the delivery of dental care, including diagnosis and management.
